The SEAT 132 was unveiled at the 1973 Barcelona Motor Show as the natural successor to the veteran 1500 in the high-end SEAT range. The car retained the classic front-engine and rear-wheel drive layout, but its concept was much more modern and dynamic…
The initial range was powered by the twin-cam 1600 and 1800 cc engines, similar to those used on the 124 Sport Coupé. The former would also be used in the SEAT 1430-1600, the first of the famous FU models. With these powerful engines and five-speed gearboxes (optional in the 1600), the 132 perfectly fulfilled its role as a premium road car.
The range was gradually renewed and modernized and, like the 1500, it also had a factory 2.0 diesel version from November 1974. It coincided with the presentation of the 132 second series, fitted with a new dashboard and even more luxurious and enveloping seats. And in 1976 the 132 got the option of an automatic gearbox, for the first time in a SEAT.
In 1978 the third and final series of the 132 appeared, which could be recognized by the protective sidebands and 14-inch wheels (previous versions got 13"). It is the first SEAT fitted with air conditioning, and also with electric front windows and rear-view mirror. On the other hand, the 132 also got electronic ignition and power steering, and the diesel version grew to 2.2 litres.
The mechanics received another welcome novelty in this third series, with the unveiling at the end of that year of the 132-2000. The model's top-of-the-range was powered by a 1919 cc twin-cam engine (a capacity chosen for taxation reasons) delivering 109 HP. This engine was a specific development from SEAT's Martorell Technical Center, which would soon also power the exclusive FL 90 version of SEAT's 124, in this case delivering five more horsepower.
The 132 was discontinued in late 1980, so the 132-2000 was only on sale for a couple of years. Almost 110.000 units were produced in total, a considerable figure for a model powered by such noble powertrains (all petrol engines were twin-cam) and relatively expensive.
SEAT would not have a model again in this high segment of the market until the launch of the Exeo in 2008. This immaculate metallic silver 132-2000 is part of the SEAT HISTÓRICOS' Collection and is kept in perfect running order.
